A UK alternative to WP Engine, priced in pounds
WP Engine is one of the largest managed WordPress hosts. WPops Land is one person running a small platform in London. If you’re choosing between the two for a small business site, here are the facts side by side, including where WP Engine is the better choice.

- Where WP Engine is stronger
The short answer
WP Engine suits sites that need support at any hour, an uptime guarantee on its higher plans and security certificates to show an auditor. It has a large team and tools for agencies running many sites.
WPops Land suits a UK business with one or a few WordPress sites that wants the hosting, updates, DNS and email records handled by one person it can phone. The price is £25 a month, every site sits behind a managed web application firewall, and the WordPress login sits behind Google sign-in.

The price in pounds
WP Engine prices in US dollars and shows pounds through a currency switcher. On 19 October 2026 its plans page gave the Essential plan as “Starting at $28” a month billed annually, which is $336 a year. The UK version of the page showed £24 a month billed annually, £288 paid up front. The page says annual billing saves 20% against paying monthly, so the monthly price is higher. Taxes and overages may be added at checkout.
Essential covers one site, 25,000 visits a month and 10 GB of storage. Business starts at $400 a month, and Enterprise is priced by their sales team.
WPops Land is £25 a month for one site, with no tiers and no visit count. After the six-month minimum it runs month to month. On the headline price, WP Engine’s Essential plan on annual billing costs less than WPops Land.
Where WP Engine is the better choice
- Support at any hour. Essential includes 24/7 chat, and Business adds phone support. I reply within 24 hours and the monitoring alerts me when a site goes down, but I’m one person.
- Data centres. You can host in London, and also in Belgium, Frankfurt, the Netherlands, Iowa, Sydney and other Google Cloud and AWS regions.
- An uptime guarantee. Business and Enterprise plans include a 99.99% uptime SLA; Essential doesn’t. I don’t offer one. Guarantees like that don’t keep a site or a business running; monitoring does, and I tell you as soon as something happens.
- Certificates. WP Engine lists ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II. WPops Land has neither, so if a customer’s security questionnaire asks for them, WP Engine can answer yes.
- Doing it yourself. You can take on-demand backups and restore them from the User Portal without waiting for anyone.
- Room to grow. Plans run to 30 sites and 400,000 visits a month, with add-ons for search and performance, and tools for agencies with many client sites.
- Price on annual billing, as above.
Where WPops Land differs
- One plan. £25 a month for one site with staging, backups, DNS and email authentication included, and nothing to size against visit counts.
- A fully managed security front door. Every site sits behind Google Cloud Armor, a web application firewall and DDoS protection, with the WordPress login behind Google sign-in. There’s nothing to configure and no option to switch it off.
- The login is behind Google sign-in. Before a WordPress login form appears, the visitor has to sign in with a Google account you’ve listed, so bots scanning for login pages get nothing back.
- DNS and email records are part of the hosting. You edit DNS from the dashboard with full change history, and I set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC and read the reports.
- The person who answers built the platform. Tickets, emails and calls to 020 3422 9767 come to me.
- A 30-day refund. If the hosting isn’t working for you in the first 30 days, I refund the rest of what you’ve paid.
Who should pick which
Stay with WP Engine, or choose it, if you need support at three in the morning, a contractual uptime guarantee, ISO 27001 or SOC 2 paperwork, or self-service tools for an agency with many client sites.
Choose WPops Land if you run one to a handful of WordPress sites for a UK business, want them looked after for you, and would rather phone the person who runs the servers.
Flywheel
Flywheel is owned by WP Engine, so if your site is on Flywheel most of this page applies to you too. Flywheel’s own plans started at $25 a month on 19 October 2026.
Moving across
Your first migration is free. I copy your files and database, test the site on the new platform, then switch the domain once you’ve checked it. Email records and redirects are part of the move. See pricing or tell me about your site.
Questions
Anything else: ask me.
Is WPops Land cheaper than WP Engine?
Not on the headline price for one site with annual billing: £24 a month against £25 on 19 October 2026. WPops Land includes DNS hosting, email authentication and the first migration, so compare what you would add to each.
Can I keep my site in London with WP Engine?
Yes. London is one of its Google Cloud and AWS regions.
Do you offer an uptime guarantee?
I don’t offer one. Guarantees like that don’t keep a site or a business running; monitoring does. I watch every site constantly and tell you as soon as something happens. Where an outage is within my control, I work on it straight away until it’s fixed. A checker in another Google region loads every site every 5 minutes, alerts me after three failures in a row, and your dashboard shows 90 days of uptime history.
Will my email keep working during the move?
Yes. Email records, redirects and caches are part of the move, and the domain only switches once you’ve checked the site.
